Everyone misplaces items from time to time. Finding the lost item takes time and a bit of knowledge. Here are a few suggestions to help find missing things.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stop and retrace steps if an item is lost while shopping. Return to all stores that were visited. Leave a name and phone number with the manager. Be sure to include a description of the lost item.

  2. Step 2

Staying at a hotel is a common place for people to lose items. Notify the hotel management as soon as possible after realizing the property is missing. If an employee took the item, it may be recovered that day before they leave work.

  3. Step 3

Call the police and report the loss. Ask about the process to claim the item if it is turned into the police.

  4. Step 4

Run and ad in the local paper or on Craigslist. Offer a reward if appropriate. Describe the lost item and contact information in the ad.

  5. Step 5

Prepare for possible ownership disputes. If ownership issues arise on an item that is found, a court may have to resolve the dispute.
