        Vitamin D supplements help back pain

        Take 2000 IU to 4000 IU of vitamin D a day. Research shows the current recommendation of 400 IU a day is not enough. During a day in the sun, a person can absorb as much as 10,000 IU of vitamin D, but only in the southern climates, where the sun's rays are strong.

        Food sources. Don't rely on milk for your vitamin D. Other sources are fish, and grains. The food highest in vitamin D is cod liver oil. Herring and catfish are also good. Shellfish, such as oysters contain a good amount of vitamin D, as does salmon, halibut and steelhead trout. Tuna and oatmeal also contain natural vitamin D. Many foods are fortified with vitamin D, such as milk, infant formula, orange juice, and infant formula.

        Vitamin B12 is also good for back pain. B12 is hard to absorb in the stomach, so the best methods of obtaining B12 are sublingually (under the tongue) or by injection. B12 is also good for pernicious anemia. Vegetarians have a hard time obtaining adequate B12 since many of the food sources are in animal proteins, so special care is needed to add B12 in a vegetarian diet.
