succeed in the Freelance Game

Freelancing, like any other business, can be tough. If you want to succeed in the freelance game, you will have to learn to play by the rules. First rule: Promote Yourself!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a list of all your skills. Include everything you can do well, from making spaghetti to waking up on time. Each skill that you have will benefit you in some way, when you are playing the freelance game.

  2. Step 2

Make a list of every single job you have ever held. Don't forget that babysitting gig you had when you were 14, or the volunteer work you did last year. Everything counts, in the freelance game, so write it all down.

  3. Step 3

Combine the two lists. Below each item, write what business skills you used or gained during that experience. Example: Your babysitting gig may have required conflict management skills (separating sibling rivals) as well as financial management skills (waiting until you got paid before spending the money) and time management skills (showing up on time, and getting the kids to bed on time).

  4. Step 4

Now that you have a looooong list of skills that you possess, use this list to create a Brag Letter about yourself. Pretend that you are writing about a good friend with all those skills, recommending them for a job. Use this letter as a basis for your resume, as well as any query letters or proposals you send out. You should be able to pick out pertinent skills for any job you want to apply for, and use them to impress your potential client.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't be afraid to brag! Clients and employers need to know what you can do. Being able to promote yourself is part of the freelance game.
