How to Convert RM Files to WMV Format for Free

"RM" stands for Real Media and is a file type that can store songs or videos; RM files are primarily used by the Real Player program. Many of these files are streamed directly from the Internet, which means you play them from a website instead of from your computer. "WMV" stands for Windows Media Video, which is used by Windows Media Player. You need to convert an RM video to WMV format in order to play it on the Windows player.

Instructions

    • 1

Download a converter program. There are a few free options available online. One example is Format Factory (See Resources), which will be used in this example. Click on the "Download" button, and then click "OK" in the window that pops up. The program should download to your computer's desktop. Double-click on the icon there to begin the installation process. Open your conversion software.

Hit the "Video" tab on the left side of the main program. Click on the "all to WMV" button. A new window will appear. Hit "Add FIle" when it does. Browse your computer for the RM file you wish to convert. Double-click on it. This takes you back to the previous screen. Hit the "OK" button.

You'll be back in the main screen now, where your file conversion will be listed under "Source." Hit the "Start" button toward the top of the screen. A blue bar will appear under the "Conversion State" label. When it's finished it will read "Completed."

Hit the "Output Folder" button to locate your new WMV file, where you can double-click on it to activate it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have trouble opening the installation file for the software, it may be because your computer doesn't have a means to open RAR files; one way to fix this is to install WinRar (see Resources).
