Instructions

    • 1

Select the correct pond filter for your koi pond. The proper filtration system depends on the size of your koi pond. The most economical options use a filter installed inside the pond, and other use a skimmer installed outside the pond. For very large koi ponds (usually 12,000 gallons or more), you may need to install more than one filter or skimmer.

    • 2

Place your external pond filters and/or pond skimmers and level them. Bury the pond skimmer to the proper waterline level beside the pond.

    • 3

Dig a ditch for the plumbing from the pond to the external pond filter or waterfall. Dig a ditch from the external pond filter or waterfall to the external pond pump for the skimmer.

    • 4

Connect the pond liner to the skimmer, putting the pipe or tubing in place while leaving a few inches to connect everything later.

    • 5

Connect all the piping or tubing to your filter and skimmer according to the specific directions. Generally there will only be three connections. Cover the ditches containing the piping or tubing with dirt.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're unsure about the correct filter system for the size of your koi pond, always purchase a larger pond filter.

  • Don't choose a filter that does not allow you to adjust the cycling rate. If your koi are small or weak, they could get sucked into the filter inlets if the pumping ratio is too high, so you'll want to be able to lower it until the koi are older and stronger.
