How to Use a Graphic Tablet in Photoshop

Photoshop is a versatile graphics program that can be used for a wide variety of projects. But as good as it is, it can be made even better by the addition of a graphics pad. While you can do good work in Photoshop with the mouse, a pad can prove even more useful. You can actually add both feel and pressure sensitivity to your drawings and paintings.

Instructions

    • 1

Open and read any information that came with your graphics pad. Every model or brand will have some features that are particular to it alone.

    • 2

Attach the USB cord of your pad to a port on your computer. The computer should pop up a window telling you a new device has been added. If you need drivers, the operating system will guide you to them.

    • 3

Open Photoshop. You should find that you can use the pen tool to guide the tool you select in Photoshop. For example, if you select the brush tool, you can drag a line across the canvas. The more pressure you apply, the more paint is applied.

    • 4

Click on the function keys at the top of the pad with the pen; they perform the same functions they do on your keyboard.

    • 5

Use the surface of the pad. The drawing area of your pad actually covers the whole screen view, not just the canvas. This means that if you increase the size of the canvas view on the screen, you get more area on the pad devoted to painting. To totally max it out, hold down the Shift key and click F. This will enlarge the canvas to fill the screen.
