Design Your Own Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans are thusly named because the legs taper down into fine points that wrap around the lower leg and give the illusion of leggings. Skinny jeans are a popular style to wear with high heels or ankle boots, as they allow the shoes to be visible. Many people prefer the style to boot-cut or wide-leg jeans, because it slims and elongates the legs, making them more aesthetically pleasing. Design your own pair if you can't find the exact style you're looking for, or simply to inject a sense of your personality into your fashion choices.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch a silhouette of the skinny jeans onto your sketchpad with a pencil. Draw the front and back of the jeans so that you can depict design elements on both sides. Remember to sketch the tapered legs that are the staple of skinny jeans.

    • 2

Sketch the back pockets onto your skinny jeans silhouette. Then embellish them with design elements like embroidery, artistic stitching or beading. Draw arabesque or geometric designs to make them stand out. When it comes to jeans, the back pockets are a major design element, which give the illusion of lift to the buttocks.

    • 3

Choose the main color for your skinny jeans. Traditionally, jeans are various shades of blue. However, colorful jeans in bold hues like yellow, pink and lime green are also stylish. Use colored pencils to color in your sketch.

    • 4

Add details on the jeans legs. Circles, stripes, swirls and floral patterns embroidered or stamped out with rhinestones will give your jeans personality and make your design stand out. You can also add design patterns that match the ones you made on the pockets. This will give your skinny jeans design a discernible motif. Use glitter pens to depict the rhinestones onto your sketch.

Come up with a logo to place on the back of the jeans or on the buttons. It can be your name, your initials or a made-up name of your choosing. It can even be an image like an anchor, a heart, a star, a rainbow or a flower. For example, the popular True Religion brand jeans' logo is a Buddha and a horse shoe.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your design to a pattern maker who will be able to transform your sketch into a wearable pair of skinny jeans. You can also purchase a pair of plain skinny jeans and add design elements like beading yourself.
