Shockwave ActiveX is a type of free online media player issued by Adobe. It differs from flash media players because, while flash players load a lot of information into the browser up front, Shockwave doesn't. The Shockwave player is geared toward providing an interactive user experience and is used primarily in the presentation of educational training materials and many interactive online browser-based games.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Adobe Shockwave home page to determine what version of the program you will need to download and install.

    • 2

Read the software license agreement to make sure you agree to what you are downloading. It's a fairly straightforward document in terms of the legal requirements. It basically provides Adobe's software and services for free and ensures that you won't sell the program or deconstruct it and attempt to steal their trade secrets.

Click the "Agree and Install Now" button. A dialog box should appear asking you where to save the program. It doesn't matter where you save it, as long as you remember where it is so you can run it once it has finished downloading. If you are presented an option to save or run the program instead, choose the option to run the program. This will eliminate the hassle of downloading and then running the installation program.

    • 4

Run the installation program. There will be an option to install other products or services along with the free Shockwave ActiveX player. These offers vary. If you do not wish to install the secondary offers, simply uncheck the box next to the offer before completing the installation process.

    • 5

Restart your browser. By restarting your browser you can ensure that the Shockwave player is installed and ready to go for your next multimedia interactive experience.
