Prepare Tuna Steaks

Tuna, a finfish, inhabits oceans around the world. Unlike most fish, the flesh of tuna ranges from pink to dark red, due to high levels of myoglobin, a pigment that carries oxygen to the muscles of the fish. Tuna steaks are large fillets that can be pan fried or grilled.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Combine 2 tbsp. olive oil and 2 tbsp. lemon juice in a medium casserole dish. Place a 6 oz. tuna steak into the dish, and coat both sides with the marinade.

  2. Step 2

Place the lid on the casserole dish, and move it into the refrigerator for 30 to 40 minutes. Flip the tuna steak over halfway through the refrigeration time.

  3. Step 3

Pour a small amount of olive oil in a skillet, and place on a burner set to medium-high heat. Allow the oil to heat up for a few minutes.

  4. Step 4

Sprinkle one side of the steak with black pepper and place onto the skillet. While it's cooking, sprinkle the upside with pepper. Allow it to cook for two minutes. Flip the tuna steak over and cook for an additional two minutes.

  5. Step 5

Remove the tuna steak from the skillet immediately. Transfer to a serving plate and serve immediately.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use a homemade or packaged marinade in place of the simple one in this recipe.
  • Do not marinate fish for more than 40 minutes. Never allow the tuna steak to cook for longer than two minutes on each side. Any longer and the steak will begin to dry out and lose some of its natural flavor.
