A brochure is a folded document used to advertise your business, service or organization. Microsoft Word 2004 can help you design a brochure for letter-, legal- or tabloid-sized paper in a variety of styles, including tri-fold, z-fold, top-fold, book-fold or business letter fold. Word comes with several brochure templates installed to help get you started. Additional templates can be downloaded from the Internet, or you can use the margin, page orientation and other document commands within Word to customize a brochure layout from scratch.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Piece of paper same size as the brochure you want
  • Microsoft Word 2004

Create Dummy Brochure and Open a Template

  1. Step 1

Fold the piece of paper to create a "dummy" brochure. This gives you a visual model to refer to while working in Word.

  2. Step 2

Make some notes on the dummy brochure to remind yourself where you want items such as the title, main graphic and different pieces of information. This will help you to place the graphics and text in the right column and on the right side of the paper when you're designing the brochure in Word.

  3. Step 3

Open Microsoft Word. If the Project Gallery window doesn't open automatically, click the File menu, then Project Gallery.

  4. Step 4

Click the Business Forms category in the list on the left, then choose Brochures from the sub-list.

  5. Step 5

Choose a template that best matches the type of brochure you want to create. Even if you want to delete all the template placeholders and start from scratch, beginning with a template at least sets the margins and page orientation for you so you don't need to waste time with that extra step.

  6. Step 6

Click the Open button to begin working with the template.

  7. Use the Brochure Wizard

  8. Step 1

  11. Step 4

Click the "Save and Exit" button at the bottom of the wizard window to save your changes and begin working on the brochure document.

  12. Customize the Template

    Click to Edit Text Boxes
    Click to Edit Text Boxes

Click the text placeholders to access the text and change it. Simply click and type. Drag over text to highlight it for formatting changes or to delete it.

  14. Step 2
    Format Picture Dialog Box
    Format Picture Dialog Box

Double click on graphics to access the Format Picture dialog box and click the Size button at the top. If you wish to change a graphic in the brochure template, you need to make sure the one you replace it with is the same size or you'll throw the layout off. This dialog box gives you the dimensions of the selected graphic.

  15. Step 3

Click the Insert menu and the Picture command to bring in your own graphics from a file or to grab a picture from Word's clip art gallery that comes installed with the software.

  16. Step 4

Move text boxes, headings or graphics around on the template if your brochure design isn't the same as what the template offers. The entire document is completely editable.

  17. Step 5

Scroll to the second page of the document. This is what will print on the back of the first page, so that together, when the page is folded, it creates a complete brochure.

  18. Step 6

Click the File menu and the Save command to save frequently while you work. Use the File menu and the Print command to preview your brochure.

Tips & Warnings
  • To print on both sides of a piece of paper if this is not a function of your printer, print the first page, then turn the first page over and put it back in the paper tray and print the second page. How your printer takes paper from the tray will determine which way you turn if for that second page. You may need to print some test pages to check the orientation. A commercial printing service can produce printed brochures from your Word file on high-quality paper with color printing, if you do not have access to these at home.
