How to Set Up a Games Server
-
1
Dedicate a PC to be used specifically as your server. While the computer does not have to have the most up-to-date video and graphics technology, you should have at least 1GB of RAM on the system. Know that the more RAM you have, the better your server's performance.
-
2
Ensure that your computer has the correct processor for the number of players you want to have using your server. Use this list as a guide:
8 players or fewer require a CPU speed of 933 MHz
9 to 16 players require a CPU speed of 1.6 GHz
17 to 32 players require a CPU speed of 2.4 GHz
Over 32 players require a CPU speed of 3.0 GHz

3
Upgrade your Internet connection to at least a broadband wired connection. If you would like more than 16 players to be using your server at one time, upgrade to a T1 connection or higher. Your Internet service provider can give you more information about service plans.
-
4
Obtain the game server software specific to each game you wish to run from your server. These can be downloaded from most developer websites. Check the manual of your game to see if the software is already built into the standard product.
-
5
Ensure each user has purchased game software. It is best to not use pirated software as this can cause problems on your server, or have the server banned from use. Without game software, players cannot use your server.
-
6
Install the game server software. You will be taken through the process of setting up your server. If asked to download additional add-ons such as anti-piracy software or blocks for cheating, do so, as it will allow your server to run smoothly and be able to house other players in confidence.
-
7
Configure the server to your own specifications. Change the maximum number of players, set time limits, available maps and so forth. Also, use this to create a server name and password if you wish to keep your server secure from outside players. Write down this information to distribute to your players.
-
8
Begin playing on your server. Depending on the game type, players will see your server in a list of available options or be able to enter the information given to them by yourself.
