How to Take The Best Beginner Motorcycle Class or Course

If you want to learn to ride a motorcycle, you will want to take a beginner motorcycle class or a beginner motorcycle course. (There is a good chance you will need to take more than one motorcycle beginners' class in order to learn everything you need to know to ride a motorcycle safely.)

How do you decide which beginner motorcycle class is best for you? You have to look at your requirements and your personal motorcycle needs in order to choose the right motorcycle beginners' courses.

  1. Step 1

    Find out your state's motorcycle endorsement (license) requirements -
    You will have to find out what requirements you have for beginner motorcycles classes by checking out the DMV site for your state. If you plan on riding the motorcycle in another state as well (for example, if you will attend college there), you should check out that state's requirements too.

  2. Step 2

    Learn for your motorcycle learning permit -
    You will need to get general motorcycle knowledge to get your motorcycle learning permit. You might be able to learn this information on your own, or you might need to or want to take a course to teach you the basics. The permit is the first step towards getting your motorcycle license or endorsement.

  3. Step 3

    Find out what training is required or recommended through your local DMV -
    Find out what you will be tested on in order to get your motorcycle license (motorcycle endorsement) from your DMV.
    You might need special training courses based on your state or locality, so be sure to check into beginner motorcycle course requirements and not just license requirements at your DMV. (Note: There are national guidelines, but you should check your state individually.)

  4. Step 4

    Find out what types of motorcycles the course trains for -
    If you find a beginner motorcycle training course, be sure to find out if it is specific to a particular motorcycle or type of street bike or if it will cover many types of motor bikes including motorcycles, ATV's & mopeds. It is important to know what type of bike you will be riding before taking the course to find out if there is enough detail for the type of motorcycle you will own.

    Take motorcycle driving courses -
    You must make sure you learn how to drive the motorcycle properly. You might want to (or need to) take private lessons to be sure you get enough on-hands experience in riding the motorcycle.

    Take motorcycle safety courses -
    Taking motorcycle safety courses are important to be sure you know how to drive the motorcycle safely in various driving conditions. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) is a national accreditation unit that accredits motorcycle riding courses throughout the United States. Check if the safety course you will take is accredited by them.

  7. Step 7

    Find out other motorcycle skills covered -
    There are other types of skills that beginner motorcycle classes will teach you beyond just basic driving and safety. Find out what other skills that beginner motorcycle training will be providing.

  8. Step 8

    Make sure you feel safe and confident in driving -
    Most importantly, no matter what type of beginner motorcycle course you take, make sure you are ready to ride the motorcycle confidently. You might feel you want to take extra classes beyond state requirements. Don't feel like a sissy if you do! It is better to be safe than sorry.
