The ideal topping for an ice cream sundae, chocolate sauce is one of those indulgent treats you can only enjoy once in a while if you are watching your sugar intake. The added sugar in typical chocolate sauce may not fit into your diet or health needs. You don't have to cut out chocolate sauce, however, if you make it yourself with sugar alternatives. Agave nectar, a high fructose natural sugar with a very low glycemic value, is an ideal substitute for sugar and makes for a healthier chocolate sauce. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 9 oz. bittersweet chocolate
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp. agave nectar

Instructions

      Chop 9 oz. of bittersweet chocolate and place it in a glass or stainless steel mixing bowl.

      Add 1 tbsp. of agave nectar to the bowl.

      Heat 1 cup of heavy cream in a sauce pan on the stove until it starts to simmer.

      Remove the pan from the heat and pour the chocolate and agave nectar into a bowl while whisking quickly until it is smooth. Use the chocolate while it is warm.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pour the chocolate sauce over ice cream, cakes, cheesecake and pies, as you see fit.

  • The chocolate sauce will last in the fridge for about a week, and can be reheated easily in a microwave or double boiler.
