The combination of black walnut hulls and alkanet root result in a rich, warm reddish-brown wood floor stain. However, this recipe can easily be modified to achieve any color you desire. If you have access to fresh black walnut hulls, give this method for making wood floor stain a try.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fresh walnut hulls
  • Alkanet root
  • Large stock pot
  • Large bucket or plastic container
  • Nylon stocking or cheesecloth
  1. Step 1

Place eight parts walnut hulls and one part alkanet root in a large stock pot. Add 32 parts water to the pot, pouring it over the top of the walnut hulls and alkanet root. The water will become your wood floor stain once the hulls have lent it their color.

  2. Step 2

Place the pot on the stove and turn the heat to medium-high. Bring the mixture to a rolling bowl and then reduce the heat. Simmer the concoction for 4-5 hours, as this will give the walnut hulls time to produce your wood floor stain.

  3. Step 3

Check your wood floor stain brew every hour, and add more water if needed. If it appears a large amount of water has evaporated, add enough to bring it up to the original water line.

  4. Step 4

Strain the wood floor stain into a large bucket or plastic container through a nylon stocking or piece of cheesecloth. Use immediately to stain hardwood floors, or store for up to one week in the refrigerator or two years in the freezer.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you prefer a black wood stain instead, you can leave out the alkanet root and use one part water to four parts hulls. An extra black walnut hull or two won't hurt, either, if you're going for a really dark stain. Also, the longer you leave them to simmer, the darker the hardwood stain will become.
  • Wear gloves any time your hands come in contact with the black walnut wood stain. It is extremely potent and will stain your skin quite easily.
  • Make sure to use a plastic bucket or container that won't be used for anything else again, as the black walnut hulls will permanently stain.
