Stay in touch with video chat.

Video chatting makes staying in touch with friends and family easier and more interesting than ever. Show off your new hairdo from all angles. Let the kids say hi to Grandma. Google offers free voice and video chat through Gmail. All you need is a webcam, a Gmail account, and a plugin downloaded from the Google website. Those you video chat with will need the same items.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install the Google voice and video chat plugin (see Resources). A common mistake people often make is to download the Google video chat plugin but forget to install the plugin, so make sure install the video chat plugin after it has downloaded.

    • 2

After you've installed the Google video chat plugin, you should be prompted to restart your browser.

    • 3

Once you have restarted your browser, log into Gmail. You and your friend should now appear with a video camcorder icon by your names instead of the green dot. (Make sure you are not invisible). The camcorder icon means you are ready to video chat.

    • 4

Mouse over your friend's name. A menu should appear to the right of the mouse showing their name and options of what you can do with them (like email, chat and video chat).

    • 5

Select "Start video Chat." Your friend should see a chat window pop up with a video and hear chiming/ringing. You have now initiated a Google video chat with your friend. Once your friend presses "Answer," you should be able to see each other.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look at google video chat's help forum for troubleshooting issues

  • You can also have just voice chats

  • This works one-way too - if you want to have a voice chat with one person why they have a video chat with you, although both users must have the google video chat plugin installed

  • - Note: This currently works and is only for Google's gmail client, currently the gtalk client outside of gmail doesn't support video chat (but hopefully will soon!)
