Sunburn is not only painful, it can also be dangerous! Keeping out of the sun is the best way to prevent sunburn. Since it's not possible to stay out of the sun all the time the next best thing is to follow these tips and avoid getting sunburn.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Apply sunscreen. A minimum SPF of 15 is recommended, but the higher the SPF the better. Wear sunscreen even if you aren't going to be in the sun very long.

  2. Step 2

Reapply sunscreen as often as directed by the manufacturer's recommendations. This is most important if you have been outdoors for a long time, or if you have been swimming or exercising.

  3. Step 3

Wear a hat! Wearing a hat can protect your face and scalp from the sun's harmful rays.

  4. Step 4

Keep covered. Don't just cover your head, wear light weight, loose fitting clothing and keep as much of your skin covered as possible when you are in the sun.

  5. Step 5

Sit in the shade or under an umbrella whenever possible.

  6. Step 6

Stay indoors during peak sun times. Try to spend your time outdoors early in the morning or later in the evening. You still need to wear sunscreen though!
