TomTom is one of the leading GPS devices on the market. One of the reasons for this is because you can readily update information on it without needing to buy a new device. TomTom includes a feature that allows users to download map updates to make sure the maps they are using are current with the maps that have been developed.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Connect the TomTom to the computer with the USB cord that was supplied with the device when it was first purchased. Turn the TomTom on and wait a few moments for the HOME screen to come up on the computer.

  2. Step 2

On the HOME screen, click the "Log in" button and enter your account information. When you log in, the system automatically checks to see if there are any updates to the maps that you may want to install on the TomTom.

  3. Step 3

Download and install a new map by clicking on the box next to the map that appears. Then click on "Update and Install." If the program asks if you want to download a new application, choose "Yes." This new application may help improve the functionality of the map.

  4. Step 4

Click "Done." The new map is now downloaded on the TomTom. The device can now safely be unplugged from the computer.

  5. Step 5

Select a new map. If there is more than one map installed on the TomTom, tap "Manage Maps" in the "Preferences" menu. Then tap "Switch map."

Tips & Warnings
  • The TomTom's audio feature can be customized to feature the voice of a country guy, the voice of a pirate, or a male or female voice.
  • People have run into trouble by trusting GPS systems more than common sense. If a route being offered by TomTom seems strange, research it a little more before assuming it is correct.
