Things You'll Need:
- Clean, dry rags
- Scissors
- Water hose
- Spray cleaner
- Dusting spray

Step 1
Set the rental equipment aside after use if it is equipment that has been used in the elements, such as kayaks, bicycles, or beach rental equipment. This helps to establish that the equipment is not to be used any more by family members unaware that it's being prepared to be returned.
-
Step 2
Remove any loose debris from the equipment. This is important if it's outdoor and beach equipment, which might be covered with sand. Spray with water using a water hose. For indoor rental equipment, wiping off dust by using a dust spray and a clean cotton cloth will go a long way in preparing the equipment for return. For this step, it's useful to remember that the equipment should look presentable with a quick glance. Many rental companies are swamped with returns and will give your equipment only a cursory look.
-
Step 3
Spray your equipment with a spray cleaner and wipe immediately with a clean dry rag made of cotton. Use an old T-shirt or towel that is cut into strips with scissors. For glass surfaces, use a glass cleaning spray. For most plastic surfaces, an all-purpose spray cleaner works well. Continue this process until all surfaces of the rental equipment have been cleaned. Make sure the cleaner is suitable for the surface being cleaned.
-
Step 4
Dry your equipment with a cotton towel, especially if your equipment was used outside or for water sports. Many rental companies insist that the equipment be dry upon return. Using a cotton towel will help prevent the scratching of surfaces.
-
Step 5
Return your clean, dry equipment. The equipment should not be used after its clean. This can be a challenge for family members, for example, who want to take a rented bicycle out for one final spin.
