How to Install a Backup Camera

Backup cameras are used in conjunction with a video monitor in a vehicle to help the driver see what is behind a vehicle when driving in reverse. Often, the video signal is transmitted from the camera to the monitor without wires, but some systems require that a signal wire be run from the camera to the monitor. While wireless backup systems are convenient, hard-wired systems offer better picture quality and usually cost less. Choose a system that fits your needs, budget, and vehicle.

Instructions

  1. Back-up Camera Installation

    • 1

Locate a good place to mount the camera. Make sure that the camera's field of vision is free of obstructions (bumpers, hitches, etc.). The camera should be positioned as close to the center of the vehicle as possible.

    • 2

Secure the camera to the vehicle using the provided mounting hardware. Many backup cameras are designed to be mounted to the license plate frame. If this is the case, make sure the license plate is not obscured by the camera or mounting hardware.

    • 3

Locate the vehicle's reverse light wire. This can easily be found at the reverse light bulb, or at the trailer harness if your car is equipped with one. Test this wire with a multi-meter. It should have 0 volts when the car is in all gears, and 12 volts in reverse.

    • 4

Solder together the camera's power wire to the vehicle's reverse wire. Seal the connection with electrical tape. Find a clean metal surface to ground to, and attach the camera's ground wire with the cordless drill and a self tapping screw.

    • 5

Run the camera's signal wire to the monitor. Test by putting the vehicle in reverse and watching for a video signal.

Tips & Warnings

  • When running the video signal wire from the outside of the vehicle to the inside, use a factory grommet. If a hole must be drilled, use caution. Keep the camera free of dirt. Clean it often with glass cleaner and a non abrasive cloth. Adding a drop of Rain-X to the lens of the camera will help keep it clean and water-free.

  • You can activate the camera with a switch instead of the reverse light. Do not view the rear view camera when the vehicle is moving forward.
