Step 1
Run the last 6 inches of each line together with the other, with the rest of the lines extending from the overlapped 6-inch segment in opposite directions.
-
Step 2
Moisten the 6 overlapped inches. This will help the lines stay together and make the knot easier to tie.
-
Step 3
Gather the entirety of one of the lines, which you will need to tie the knot. In other words, you cannot have both lines already secured to something else. If you are attaching dental floss to a length of fishing line, you can use the dental floss container as the gathered end of string. You can tie the knot with the dental floss still in its container, and just 6 to 8 inches unrolled.
-
Step 4
Make a loop in the 6 inches of overlapped lines, and pass the gathered end (or the dental floss container) through the loop twice. This step is similar to the first part of tying a shoelace, except the line must pass twice rather than just once.
-
Step 5
Tighten the loop until the knot is drawn tight. Test the knot by pulling on the lines on either side of the overlap, drawing them apart.
