How to Use Handbrake for Windows Vista
Handbrake is a free, powerful software tool that allows you to easily convert videos between formats, change their size and alter many other encoding options. Download Handbrake. Using your favorite browser, point it to handbrake.fr. Click on the "Download" link and choose the version of Handbrake for Windows Vista. When prompted, save the file on your computer.

Install Handbrake. Click on the "Start" menu and select "Run." Browse to where you installed the Handbrake install file and double-click it to install. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Handbrake to your computer.

Familiarize yourself with the Handbrake GUI. Open Handbrake and look at the options. Also notice the preset options for common devices on the right-hand side. There are also many additional options in the tabs near the middle of the screen.

Encode a video. Select the video or DVD source by clicking "Source" in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Click "Browse" in the Destination box to name a video file for the destination. If you want to convert the video, select the desired video format from the Output Settings menu. Click "Start" to encode.

Use the advanced options. Depending on your needs, you can adjust settings related to audio, chapters, subtitles, compression and size. You can also select a device from the list at the right side of the screen. Handbrake will automatically adjust the settings for this device--simply choose a source and destination file and click "Start."

Tips & Warnings
Encoding may take a long time, depending on the length of your video and the speed of your computer. Be patient--Handbrake can encode in the background while you perform other tasks. You can also set up the queue to encode multiple videos automatically. If you are ripping DVDs, you'll need to download additional software that breaks DVD encryption, if the DVD is encrypted.
