Things You'll Need:
- Propane orifice or nozzle
- Pliers or two wrenches
- Teflon tape
- Liquid detergent
-
Step 1
Check the owner's manual for the appliance to be converted to propane to see if there is a location on the appliance for the alternative nozzles for the appliance. If the propane nozzles are not built in to the appliance, take unit's make and model numbers to a home center to buy the correct nozzle or orifice for the appliance.
-
Step 2
Turn off the gas to the appliance.
-
Step 3
Remove the natural gas nozzle or orifice with pliers or two wrenches, depending on the appliance to be converted and the location of the orifice that needs to be exchanged.
-
Step 4
Clean the threads with a stiff brush---an old toothbrush will work well.
-
Step 5
Apply two or three wraps of Teflon tape to the outside threads of the connection.
-
Step 6
Screw the propane orifice or nozzle in place, using pliers or two wrenches.
-
Step 7
Turn on the propane to the appliance.
-
Step 8
Check for gas leaks with a testing solution made of liquid detergent and one half cup of water. Mix the solution until it is very bubbly. Apply to the connection. If any new or larger bubbles form, turn off the gas, remove the nozzle or orifice and remove the Teflon. Clean the threads of both parts with a stiff toothbrush, re-wrap the Teflon and re-attach the nozzle or orifice and check for gas leaks again.
