1
Purchase a curling iron. If you want big, loose curls, choose an iron with a large barrel. If you want smaller, tighter curls, buy an iron with a smaller barrel. Try to get an iron with multiple heat settings.

2
Plug in your iron and set it on a medium heat setting. Your hair may require a hotter setting, but it's best to start out a little cooler. Some curling irons get very hot and possibly could damage your hair (especially if it's dry and brittle already).

Separate your hair into a small section. Use a brush or comb to make sure it is smooth and free of tangles. While holding the section of hair out straight with one hand, use the other hand to press the lever on the curling iron. This will open the movable clamp on the iron and allow you to place it on the section of hair. Release the lever so that the section is caught between the barrel of the curling iron and the movable clamp. Slide the iron down so that it is right at the end of the section of hair.

4
Roll toward the scalp. Once the section of hair is in place, roll the iron toward your scalp. You can do this in an upward or downward direction, depending on which way you want the hair to curl. For spiral curls, roll the hair in a spiral shape onto the iron. Once you've rolled the section of hair as far as possible, hold the iron in place. For less curl, release the clamp sooner; for more curl, wait longer. You may have to test a few pieces of your hair to see how long it takes for your hair to curl properly, as the wait-time varies depending on hair texture and thickness.

5
Repeat this process until you've curled all your hair (or possibly just a certain area, depending on the hairstyle you're aiming for). Use hairspray or spritz over the areas you've curled to help hold the curl in place. Using your fingers or your brush/comb, style the curls as necessary. The more you brush, the more the curl is going to relax.
