How To Add RAM to an eMachine
Adding RAM to a computer can increase its ability to access programs and files faster and at the same time. eMachines are low-cost home computers that often come ready to use with a minimal amount of RAM installed. Upgrading RAM is a task most users are able to do themselves. It is important that the RAM is compatible with the eMachine and you will need to know the model of your eMachine to purchase a RAM upgrade.

1
Determine the model of your eMachine. This info can be found in your user manual or purchase information. You may also be able to locate the model name and type by looking on the case of the eMachine. Visit a website that specializes in RAM for a variety of computer types (see link in Resources). On that website, you will be able to select your eMachine make and model and determine how much RAM your eMachine can handle. Purchase the maximum amount of RAM your eMachine can handle. Purchase RAM in matching pairs. If your eMachine has 3 bays (as some do), purchase 3 matching pieces of RAM.

3
Locate the existing RAM inside the eMachine. Always discharge static electricity before touching inside a computer or the RAM itself. Discharge static by touching your hands to a non-connected metal object before touching the RAM or the computer.
-
4
Firmly grasp the installed RAM and pull each piece of RAM out. If there is a plastic clip on each side of the RAM, use your thumb to pull the clip back and lift each side of the RAM out.
-
5
Pick up the new RAM by the edges, remembering to discharge static electricity. Push each piece of RAM into a slot where the old RAM was. You may have to push firmly to get the RAM in place. It will only fit in 1 way and the gold connection lines on the edge of the RAM should fit into the RAM bays securely. If plastic clips are there, use your thumb to hold them open while pushing the RAM into place.

6
Replace the eMachine cover and cover screws. Reconnect all power and connections and turn on the computer. Go to Start > Control Panel > System. You will see the amount of RAM installed listed. Check to ensure this amount matches the amount that you installed.
