How to Type a Legal Envelope Using Microsoft Word

Typing addresses onto envelopes is much more professional and legible than writing the addresses by hand. The Envelopes and Mailings tool in Microsoft Word allows you to type and print out all types of envelopes, including legal-sized ones. These tools allow you to easily type in the recipient's address and return address, and choose specific options for envelope size. The steps below will help you type and print out a legal envelope using Microsoft Word 2003 and 2007.

Instructions

    • 1

In Word 2003, go to "Tools," "Letters and Mailings" and select "Envelopes and Labels." Click on the "Envelopes" tab when the box comes up. In Word 2007, go to the "Mailings" tab and click on "Envelopes" in the "Create" section and the same box will appear.

    • 2

Click "Options" on the right side of the box.

    • 3

Select "Size 10" under the "Envelope Size" drop-down menu in the "Envelope Options" tab. Legal envelopes are size 10.

    • 4

Adjust the printer settings on the "Printing Options" tab. Choose how the envelopes are fed through your printer; you may need to consult the owner's manual for your printer to set up this part. Click "OK" and you will return to the "Envelopes and Labels" box.

    • 5

Type in the recipient's address in the "Delivery Address" box. Enter each item on a separate line.

    • 6

Type in the return address in the "Return Address" box. Each item should be on a separate line.

    • 7

Place the legal envelope into the printer. Click "Print."
