How to Sell a Diamond on eBay

Selling a loose diamond or diamond jewelry on eBay allows sellers to set their own price if they choose or to set up an auction and let the highest bidder determine the price of the diamond. Millions of buyers search for items each day on eBay. This buyer traffic makes eBay one of the best places to sell a diamond.

Instructions

1. Go through the eBay home page to sign up for an account. The registration process requires new members to choose their own user name and to fill out the contact information sheet. The email address you provide to eBay will then be verified to get your account started.

2. Click on the sell link that is on the top of each eBay page. The sell link will take you to a page where you will click the words "Start Selling." This will bring up a search box where the eBay selling menu will try to narrow down which category your diamond or diamond item belongs in. Type the word "diamond" along with any other identifying details about your item. This may be the words "jewelry," "antique," "ring," "watch" or any other major identifiers that can help the system to narrow down the categories.

3. Choose the best category for your diamond and start filling in the listing page to sell it. There is a Jewelry and Watches category that will be the best choice for most diamonds. Start with a title that best describes your diamond. Use words that people may search for when looking for your diamond instead of subjective words like "cute" or "bright."

4. Write a description. To get the most interested customers and the best price, you need either the original paperwork that came with your diamond or a recent appraisal. Either of these will have professional grading for your diamond. Include the grading in your description as well as a mention of any flaws in your diamond. If you don't have any grading available for your diamond, avoid attempting to grade the diamond yourself if you aren't qualified to do so. If a buyer finds that your estimate is wrong, you can be sued later or you may have a fraud complaint lodged against you through eBay.

5. Take pictures of your diamond by using your digital camera's macro feature. This will allow you to take a picture from far enough away from the diamond to avoid a flash glare and still have a close-up picture that will show plenty of detail. Click the picture link on the listing page to upload pictures of the diamond.

6. Decide to either have a fixed-price eBay listing or an auction listing. If you choose the fixed-price listing, choose a reasonable price that will bring in buyers but still provide you with the amount of money you need to make from the diamond. If you choose the auction format, start the auction listing for the minimum amount that you can accept for it. Another option for an auction listing is to start the auction price at a lower price in order to attract bids and to create a reserve price that must be met in order for the item to sell.
