How to Do Bible Study for Kids

Although learning styles of children vary at every age, Bible study can be designed to tap diverse learning styles using hands-on materials, visual aids, music or other auditory methods so the study is not just heard, but experienced. The key is for kids to have fun engaging in creative Bible study, while a meaningful biblical concept is developed during the session.

Instructions

1. Determine the theme for Bible study. Theme ideas can be geared around holidays, people of the Bible, Bible stories or some of the personality traits of people in the Bible.

2. Begin Bible study with prayer. Be sure to ask the children if they have any prayer requests that they would like to include in the session.

3. Introduce the theme or topic to the children and let them discuss what they know about it.

4. Read (or let children read) a selected age appropriate story that pertains to the subject matter.

5. Discuss the theme or topic again, after reading the story and ask what they learned about the subject.

6. Follow up with scripture from a children's Bible to enforce the subject.

7. Allow children to use crayons, coloring sheets, markers, paint, poster board or other craft materials to express concepts learned through the Bible study. Kids love activities that allow them to show their creative side.

8. Discuss with the children how the subject can be practiced in their life as they are busy with their craft.

9. Close Bible study with prayer.

Tips & Warnings

• To change things up from time to time, allow the children to choose a word from the Bible to be the focus for Bible study. Shepherd, frankincense, ark, manger and wisdom are a few examples.

• The most important thing to remember when teaching Bible study with children is to talk and guide them at their level and to do activities that are within their ability.
