Large wooden wallet

A wallet is a pouch or case used for carrying money, credit cards and other small items. Typically made of leather or cloth, a wallet can easily fit inside a pocket or handbag. Flexible wallets flip open for ease of use. Goods are inserted inside a series of handy slots. You can also make a solid wallet out of wood. A wooden wallet can act as a portable box for your valuables.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two identical pieces of plywood, each measuring 4 1/2-by-3 1/2 inches. Cut a shallow groove 1/4 inch from the end of one of the 3 1/2-inch sides of each of these squares. The groove should run completely across the 3 1/2-inch side of your wooden wallet.

    • 2

Cut two strips of plywood 4-by-1 1/2 inches. Make two additional strips 3 1/2-by-1 1/2 inches.

    • 3

Place one 4 1/2-by-3 1/2 inch piece of plywood groove-side up on a flat surface. Stand up one of the 4-inch strips on the 4 1/2-inch side of the larger piece of plywood. The strip should start behind the groove on the larger piece of plywood. The strip should be standing on its 1/8-inch side. Glue the strip to the larger piece.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 with the other 4-inch strip. Glue the strip to the opposite 4 1/2-inch side of the same larger piece of plywood.

    • 5

Stand up one of the 3 1/2-inch strips on the 3 1/2-inch side of the larger piece of plywood on the side opposite the groove. The strip should pass directly behind, and rest next to, the ends of the two 4-inch strips. Glue the 3 1/2-inch strip in place.

    • 6

Place the other 4 1/2-by-3 1/2 inch piece of plywood groove-side down directly over the other larger piece of plywood and on top of the three strips. The groove on this piece should be exactly above the groove of the lower piece. Glue this 4 1/2-by-3 1/2 inch piece of plywood to the strips of plywood.

    • 7

Allow the glue to dry. Slide the remaining 3 1/2-by-1 1/2 inch strip in between the two grooves. Open and close your wooden wallet by sliding this strip back and forth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Paint or stain your wooden wallet to create different effects. Paint on decorative designs or use stencils to add your initials.

  • Do not make the grooves so deep that they interfere with the integrity of the wood. Grooves should be just deep enough to allow the "door" of your wooden wallet to slide smoothly.
