Change a Domain Owner

Changing the ownership of a domain name is a relatively straightforward and simple process. There are two ways to change the ownership of a domain name. The first is by pushing the domain name to a user of the same domain registrar. The other is to transfer the domain to a user at a different registrar.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Gather all necessary information. Specific information that might be needed includes the new owner's first and last name, address, telephone number, and email address. If the new owner is planning to keep the domain with the original registrar, his user name or client number is also be needed. It is also necessary to find out if the new owner would like to keep the domain at the same registrar or if a new registrar will be used, as this will affect the process of transferring ownership of the domain.

  2. Step 2

If the new owner would like to keep the account with the same registrar, a simple transfer process called a "push" of the domain will need to be done. Every registrar has a different setup, but look for something that says "push domain to new user." Click on this section and fill in the requested details. These details should contain all the information gathered in Step 1, so filling this out should go fairly quickly. Once the information is submitted, the transfer of ownership of the domain is almost immediate and both parties should receive a confirmation email of the transfer.

  3. Step 3

If the new owner would like to use a different registrar than the current one, he must initiate the transfer at the new registrar. Registrars will have a page somewhere on the site that says something like "transfer domain." Clicking on this and filling out the requested information will initiate the transfer. But unlike the process of "pushing" the domain to a new user at the same registrar, this process has an added step. The registrar will need to contact the original owner of the domain and receive permission to transfer the domain. There is a grace period, typically five days, for the original owner to authenticate this transfer. If the original owner does not give permission for the transfer during this grace period, the transfer process will be aborted. But if the original owner does give permission, the transfer is usually completed by the registrar within a 10-day period.

Tips & Warnings
  • There is typically a fee associated with the transfer of a domain to a new registrar, while transferring ownership of a domain within the same registrar is typically free. Therefore, it might be beneficial to keep the domain at the same registrar if at all possible.
  • Domains cannot be transferred to a different registrar within 60 days of the purchase of the domain. If a domain is inactive or involved in any type of legal proceeding, the transfer will not be able to take place.
