Things You'll Need:
- Lug wrench
- Key wrench if necessary
- Ratchet and socket
- Floor jack
- Wire brush
- Brake parts cleaner if necessary
- Brake caliper grease if necessary
- Torque wrench
-
Step 1
Detach the wheel cover from the tire you need to change using the end of a lug wrench. Pry against the wheel cover flange.
-
Step 2
Detach the center ornament off the wheel cover, if the wheel is equipped with anti-theft wire wheel covers; use the pick of the key wrench. Then remove the lock bolt using the key wrench and pry the wheel cover off.
-
Step 3
Loosen the wheel lugs using the lug wrench. If your wheel is equipped with anti-theft lug nuts, use the key wrench, a socket and a ratchet to loosen the lock nut.
-
Step 4
Jack up the car using a floor jack until the tire you need to change clears the ground.
-
Step 5
Remove the wheel lugs and then remove the tire.
-
Step 1
Clean the hub-mounting surface to get rid of dirt and corrosion using a wire brush and brake parts cleaner if necessary. Then apply a light coat of brake caliper grease to the hub-mounting surface to prevent corrosion buildup.
-
Step 2
Mount the tire on the wheel hub and start the wheel lugs by hand to avoid cross threading. Tighten the lug nuts just enough to secure the tire firmly against the wheel hub.
-
Step 3
Lower the vehicle.
-
Step 4
Tighten the wheel lug nuts between 85 and 105-foot lbs. using a torque wrench and a socket. If your wheel is equipped with anti-theft lug nuts, use the key wrench, the socket and the torque wrench to tighten the wheel lock nut. Use a star-shaped pattern to tighten the nuts.
-
Step 5
Position the wheel cover on the tire and line up the tire valve stem with the hole on the wheel cover. Then push the wheel cover over the mounting flange to snap-lock the cover in place.
-
Step 6
Install the lock bolt and tighten the bolt with the key wrench, if your tire is equipped with anti-theft wire wheel covers. Then install the center ornament cover with your hand.
