Microfiber is a polyester fabric made of fibers 100 times finer than a human hair. Microfiber is very strong, yet light, because the fibers are so tightly woven. It's often called microsuede. Make sure a sofa is authentic microfiber before purchasing by checking the sofa tags and instructions that accompany it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vacuum or lint roller
  • Water and dish soap or solvent
  • Clean, moist sponge
  1. Step 1

Read the care instructions and tag on a microfiber sofa. Note if it can be cleaned with water, solvent, either one or if it needs to be professionally cleaned.

  2. Step 2

Blot up spills on a microfiber sofa immediately with a towel, but do not rub. Microfiber is water resistant, but if the liquid sits, it could soak in.

  3. Step 3

Test a small, inconspicuous area and allow it to dry before using any method to clean a microfiber sofa. Under a cushion is good.

  4. Step 4

Use a clean, moist sponge and a little mild dish soap to clean a microfiber sofa that can be cleaned with water. Distilled water is best. Use a hair dryer on low setting to dry it.

  5. Step 5

Vacuum or use a lint roller to dust your microfiber sofa weekly. If you vacuum, take care that the suction isn't strong enough to pull the fabric or it could get stretched which can cause it to pucker and wrinkle.

  6. Step 6

Restore the soft texture to a microfiber sofa after cleaning by using a soft tooth or nail brush. Cleaning sometimes causes the texture to harden.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't use water to clean a microfiber sofa that should be cleaned with solvent because the water may leave rings.
