If you need to make a duplicate of a VCR tape, here is the process.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • (2) VCRs
  • (1) RCA cable with yellow/red/white male plugs on each end
  1. Step 1

Use one VCR to record FROM, and one VCR to record TO.
On the back of the VCRs, or possibly the front, there are inputs and outputs which are color coded yellow/red/white. You'll need to get a set of A/V editing cables (RCA cables). They will be color coded yellow/red/white also. On your "Record FROM" VCR, (the one with the original tape), hook up the cables to the OUTPUT.

  2. Step 2

Then on the "record TO" VCR, (the one with the blank tape), hook up the cables to your INPUT. Be sure the "record TO" VCR is in "VCR" mode (not TV).
You may want to hook up a TV to the "record TO" VCR, to verify that your getting a good picture.

  3. Step 3

Set the TV on ch 3 or 4, whichever channel you use, and hit Play on the "Record FROM" VCR. IF everything is set up correctly, you will see the original tape being played on the TV.

  4. Step 4

Now hit Record on the "Record TO" VCR, and wait until the recording is done.

  5. Step 5

    NOTE:
If you don't see a picture on the TV, check all of the connections. (Yellow cable plug to yellow VCR port, Etc.) If this doesn't work try toggling the 3/4 channel switch on the 2nd VCR, or toggle the VCR/TV switch.
When you get a picture on the TV, then you should have everything connected correctly.
You might want to test out a minute or 2, before wasting 2 hours!!

Tips & Warnings
  • Since you are making a copy of a copy, set the record speed to SP (2hr.) (short play), instead of LP (4hr.)(long play), or EP (6hr.)(extra long play). You will have a better quality recording this way.
