Step 1
Know your children's sizes so that when you see clothes or shoes on sale, you'll know if they will fit.
-
Step 2
Shop anywhere and everywhere. Children's consignment stores, church bazaars, estate and garage sales, discount stores (TJ Maxx, Filene's, Marshall's, Burlington Coat Factory, Outlet Malls), large chain stores (Walmart, Kmart, Target, etc.) and at regular department stores --- only when there are sales. Keep your eyes out for sales wherever you are. If you like a particular brand, go online --- check through ebay and other auction sites.
-
Step 3
Buy clothes and shoes for the next season and beyond. If you see a bargain on something classic that will fit in a year or even two, buy it! Leave the tags on -- you'll be even happier about your bargain when you find it in the closet and it fits your son or daughter.
-
Step 4
Buy the best quality you can and try to buy clothes that won't go out of style...important if you have more than one child and will be passing the clothes down to successive siblings. Jean overalls, pants, and skirts are always in style and always look great. Same with penny loafers and mary janes.
-
Step 5
Buy clothes out-of-season to take advantage of the sales. Winter coats are usually on sale in the spring for the next season. If you travel to a different climate, hit the discount stores if you have a few minutes -- they have a different selection than the stores in your area, so there may be bargains!
-
Step 6
Trade clothes with your friends. Trading baby and toddler clothes makes terrific moneysense. Sleepers, little jeans, onesies, etc., have lots of life after one baby --- share it! Pass the clothes back and forth as you add to your brood --- after everyone is finished having babies, donate to charity.

on 11/11/2009 I found a website that lets you mail in the clothes my kids have outgrown in exchange for clothes that fit. It has saved my family lots of money! It's called Gumdropswap.

on 6/12/2009 This is good advice for today's economy and tomorrow's economy. Everybody keeps talking about "when the economy improves..." This is not about THE economy...it's about YOUR economy. You can save money on children's clothes and shoes if you do not have debts and payments. Then you will find your bank accounts flowing with money. Thanks for sharing this information with all of us.
