Step 1
Apply NOW. This sounds obvious, but many people just THINK about doing therapeutic horseback riding for years and then finally apply. It would be better to apply as soon as you think about it and then use your time on the wait list to think if this is the right program for you. Waiting to apply until you really want to do it can make the wait seem very long.
-
Step 2
Apply to more than one therapeutic riding program in your area. Go to NARHA’s website (www.NARHA.org) to find NARHA centers close to you. The more wait lists you are on will up your chances of getting a place in a program.
-
Step 3
Be flexible! Often when a space becomes available it is on a specific day and at a specific time. It may not be the most convenient time for you, but if you do it for one session (8-12 weeks for most programs), you will probably be able to request a different time slot for the next session. The key is to get into the program first!
-
Step 4
Check in occasionally with the programs to see if you have moved up the wait list. Try not to do this more than every six months. It’s good to remind them you are interested, but you don’t want to hassle them.
-
Step 5
Attend events sponsored by the therapeutic riding programs you have applied for. Many hold pony rides, open houses and other fundraisers. This will give you a chance to meet the staff, volunteers, and horses.
