Step 1
Determine load size and weight. Use a cord with an appropriate tensile strength. This is the ability of the cord to not break under pressure.

If using in a boating application, you will want fabric that covers the cord to not be the type that will rot. Look for a shock cord made with a Dacron exterior as this type will hold up extremely well when wet and out in the elements.

Step 3
When installing a shock cord, make sure you the hooks that are used or tie downs are strong enough for the load you are holding back. Test the load by shifting it to see how the cord holds up. The J style hooks and SR style hooks are the most common. You can find heavy duty or regular strength hooks. Use a hook that is appropriate for the load.
