A bassinet is a small basket used by the side of the bed for a newborn to sleep in, near his parents. A cover for a bassinet is traditionally made from white eyelet material, which is delicate and beautiful, much like that little newborn who will be sleeping inside. Making your own bassinet cover is simple and requires little sewing. You can make your own pattern using an old sheet. Learn how to spiff up your bassinet and give that new family member an attractive and cozy spot to rest in when he comes home from the hospital.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Old sheet
  • Eyelet material
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Stick-on Velcro
  1. Step 1

Remove the mattress pad from your bassinet. Take an old sheet and place the center in the bottom of the bassinet. Spread out the sheet so it lays against the interior walls of the bassinet, with the excess sheet draping over the outside edges.

  2. Step 2

Place the mattress pad back in the bassinet on top of the sheet, securing the cover in place. Cut the sheet edges draped over the outside of the bassinet to the desired length, making an even and level bottom edge of your bassinet cover. You now have a pattern for your bassinet cover.

  3. Step 3

Remove your sheet (your pattern) and take it to the fabric store. Have a piece of eyelet material cut in the same dimensions as your sheet fragment.

  4. Step 4

Hem the entire outside edge of your eyelet material to make the end of the fabric tidy. Place the center of your bassinet cover in the bottom of the bassinet, putting the mattress on top of the cover to secure it. Attach Velcro at various spots along the inside lip of the bassinet, with the corresponding Velcro stuck onto the underside of the adjacent eyelet material. Stick Velcro halves to each other to secure cover to the side of the bassinet.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can add ribbons or lace to make the cover's hem more festive.
