Things You'll Need:
- Beams of shaft material (carbon fiber, fiberglass or a hard wood such as ash)
- Saw
- Measuring tape
- Tape
-
Step 1
Determine the length for your shaft. The standard handle length is 163 cm, but there is variation from this norm. Most players want a stick that reaches to their nose when they are in bare feet, or to about their shoulders when they are wearing skates.
-
Step 2
Mark your shaft material at the distance you find most comfortable for you.
-
Step 3
Cut the beam of shaft material to the proper length. A hacksaw is not necessary, but can provide a cleaner cut with less splintering. Use short strokes while sawing to reduce splintering.
-
Step 4
Tape the handle up as you find most comfortable. Different players hold their sticks in slightly different positions on the stick's handle, some putting their strong hand farther down on the stick than other players do. Determine which positioning and taping are most comfortable for you.
-
Step 5
Attach the new handle to the blade of your stick for a game-ready piece, or keep the shaft handle on stand-by as a replacement when you need it next.
