Impotence or erectile dysfunction can make life difficult. Impotence is defined as when an erection does not last long enough to have sexual intercourse, and it's also traditionally defined as such when an erection does not occur at all. It's not all about the obvious problems it can cause with a partner. It can have psychological effects as well. Dealing with impotence can be overwhelming.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk to your partner. This can have an affect on them, too. It is important that your partner understands that you are dealing with impotence. They can help support you and help you deal with the problem. Your partner also needs to know so that there are no misunderstandings in your relationship.

  2. Step 2

Make an appointment with a mental health counselor or psychiatrist. Impotence could be caused by stress, anxiety, feelings of guilt, and/or fear. If one of these feelings is causing impotence, it could be cured without prescription medications. Working with a counselor can help you work through these feelings and get your sex life back.

  3. Step 3

Experiment with your partner in the bedroom. Instead of focusing on the climax, focus on massage, touch, kissing, and just spending time with each other. Set the mood with some sweet smelling candles and light music. Kama Sutra can help you be intimate with your partner without actually having intercourse.

  4. Step 4

Seek prescription medications if nothing else seems to work or for a temporary fix. Viagra, Cialis and Levitra can help you get and sustain an erection. Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss medications for impotence. Choose which one would be best for you.

  5. Step 5

Have your testosterone levels checked. This is rare, but it is possible that low testosterone can cause impotence. Symptoms of low testosterone include mood swings, lack of energy, depression, and a decreased libido. If you have any of these symptoms along with impotence (or without) have your testosterone levels tested.

  6. Step 6

Quit smoking. Smoking can constrict blood vessels, which can make getting blood down there more difficult. Smoking puts you at risk for atherosclerosis, which can cause impotence. Quit smoking now to reduce your risk and regain normal erections.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol as these can cause impotence or make it worse. Make an appointment with your doctor for a thorough medical examination. There might be an underlying medical condition causing the impotence. There also could be a medication causing impotence. Make sure you bring any and all of your medications with you, even the ones you get over the counter.
