How to Convert Images Into JPEG

JPEG is the most common, and most well-known, digital image file format. It is used as the native file format on most digital cameras and in countless digital imaging software programs. It is also the most common image format used in web design. By using GIMP--the Gnu Image Manipulation Program--you can convert most any popular image format into JPEG.

Instructions

For Windows users, download the GIMP installation file from the GIMP for Windows page (see Resources), then install the program.
For Linux users, the GIMP Downloads page (see Resources) has easy installation instructions for most major Linux distributions, and direct downloads for others. Visit it, find the instructions for your favorite Linux flavor, and install the program.
For Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later, download the GIMP installation file for your version of OS X from the GIMP for Mac OS X page (see Resources), then install the program.

Run GIMP. Click "File," then click Open.
In the dialogue box that opens, use the file browser to locate the image you want to convert. Click the file, then click "Open."

GIMP is excellent, full-featured imaging software. If you would like to edit your image before saving it into JPEG format, you can do so now. (See Resources for documentation on how to use GIMP).

    • 4

Click "File," then click "Save As ... ."
In the dialogue box that opens, replace your current file's extension with "jpg." For example, if your file name is "image.bmp," change it to "image.jpg."
After changing your file name to reflect the JPG extension, change the actual file format. To do so, locate the area in the dialogue box that displays the current file format. For example, for a file named "image.bmp," the file format area should read, "Windows BMP image." Click that, and a menu will drop down. Select "JPEG image."

In the file browser portion of the dialogue box, choose the destination folder for your newly-saved JPEG. Click "Save." You can close GIMP. Your JPEG will be waiting in the folder you chose.
