How to Shift an ATV

All terrain vehicles, or ATVs, are recreational vehicles that allow you to go anywhere and do pretty much anything. They are light, maneuverable and easily maintained, and can provide hours of enjoyment. Some ATVs are even equipped with four-wheel drive, offering even more control and access to rougher areas. However, you won't be able to get very far at all if you cannot shift the ATV's transmission. Shifting an ATV is not difficult, but will take practice to perfect.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit on the ATV with the transmission in neutral and the engine running.

    • 2

Put your foot on the brake lever on the right-hand side of the bike and then slide the toe of your shoe underneath of the shift lever on the left side of the bike.

    • 3

Lift up slightly until you hear a "click" and feel the ATV jump a bit. Depress the thumb lever on the right handlebar to give the bike some fuel, and let up on the right brake pedal.

    • 4

Continue giving the ATV fuel for a few more seconds, then let up on the thumb lever, quickly lifting up on the shift lever with your toe to shift into a higher gear. To shift to a lower gear, let out on the thumb lever and then depress the shift lever with your left foot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to let the engine rev down a bit each time you change gears, as you do not want to "over rev" the engine and cause damage to the engine and transmission internals.
