The OTC ball joint removal tool is a hand press that can be used to remove or install ball joints for a variety of applications. The tool is essentially a C-clamp with a variety of adapters that allow the ball joints to be dismantled or assembled by pressing the ball out of, or into, the joint arm. This tool is extremely useful, as it allows you to work with the ball joints without damaging them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Remove a ball joint by sizing the adapters in the OTC tool to the ball joint in question. You want the adapter to fit snugly on the ball joint itself, but not so tightly that it could cause damage to the joint.

  2. Step 2

Insert one of the press-through fittings between the ball joint and the C-clamp's solid end. Pick a fitting that is slightly larger than the ball of the ball joint so that as the ball is pressed out, it will fall into the press-through fitting.

  3. Step 3

Use the crescent wrench to slowly turn the press handle clockwise to press the ball out of the joint arm.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not be concerned if the ball joint "pops" loudly out of the joint, as this is a pressed fitting and is under a great deal of pressure. No damage will be done to the ball unless a section is sheered or nicked.
