Another bone in the lower back, the coccyx, is usually fallen on which causes the tailbone to get bruised. When you bruise your tailbone, any contact with it can flare up pain. Sitting for long periods of time on hard surfaces can also make this happen. For that reason, sit in a doughnut cushion to keep the tailbone protected.
-
2
Apply an ice pack to keep the swelling down. For two to three days, place the ice pack on your tailbone in 20 to 30 minute increments every three to four hours.

If the pain is severe, take medication. Your doctor may prescribe Flexeril or Vicodin. Over-the-counter treatments include Tylenol, Advil or Aleve.

If you bruise your tailbone and become constipated, the pain can become exacerbated. To avoid this from happening, make sure to get enough fiber in your daily diet. Some examples of foods that have fiber include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, flax seeds and psyllium husks.
