How to Clean Headphone Jacks

Many people find dirt, lint, fuzz and grime collecting inside the headphone jack of their portable audio device. No matter what kind of music player you use, if it has a headphone jack, chances are there's some dirt in it. This little bit of grime is not necessarily a problem, but it can affect your audio if it's allowed to build up too much.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your device off and remove the headphones.

    • 2

Remove most (but not all) of the cotton from one end of your swab using scissors or your fingers.

    • 3

Dip the end with the cotton removed into a small amount of rubbing alcohol.

    • 4

Gently place the end of the swab with the rubbing alcohol into the device.

    • 5

Carefully move the swab around, allowing the dirt to collect on the tip.

    • 6

Remove the swab and allow the device to dry before using again.

Tips & Warnings

  • There's a water sensor at the bottom of the iPhone headphone jack. Getting the sensor wet may void your warranty. Cleaning the headphone jack is unlikely to fix most audio problems. Don't use your audio device until the headphone jack is dry.
