Winter coats can depend on your particular climate and needs. For example, if you live where there is a lot of snow, find a coat that is waterproof. If you don't, a wool coat might be a good choice. If you have a child that tends to lose things, choose a coat with an attached hood, rather than giving him a separate hat. There are other things to consider when choosing a winter coat for kids.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a comfortable coat. Have your children try on the coats. Many kids are picky about how a coat feels. Boys, in particular, do not often like bulky coats, as it can limit their activities, so they might refuse to wear a coat that is too "puffy." Also, consider how it looks. Many children are fussy about colors and designs. Let your children help choose their coats, so you know they will want to wear them.

  2. Step 2

Select a coat that is right for your climate. If you have a lot of winter rain, select a raincoat or other waterproof coat. If you live in a cold climate, buy something with down or other insulation.

  3. Step 3

Buy a coat that is the right size. Many parents buy a coat that is too large, thinking the child can wear it for two winters. This is not recommended, as children can grow at different rates. Purchase a coat that fits your child now. However, allow for room under the coat if your kids wear heavy sweaters in winter.

  4. Step 4

Look for quality construction. Tug on the zipper and make sure any snaps are securely fastened. Some inexpensive coats are poorly constructed, so it might be worth the money to pay a more for a quality jacket.

  5. Step 5

Consider a coat that has layers. Some winter coats have linings that can detach from the outer, heavier coat. These are perfect for the transition into spring, or when you go skiing.
