How to Effectively Clean Chrome Rims

After cleaning and waxing your car, one detail that can really make your car look fantastic is shiny chrome rims. Chrome rims can become damaged or corroded if not properly taken car of, so it is important to clean your rims on a regular basis. If you are looking to effectively clean your chrome rims, read on for more information.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Chamois or washcloth
  • Soap and water or other cleaning product
  • Hose
  • 1 can of cola
  1. Step 1

    Using a garden hose, spray down your wheels and rims. This removes surface dirt and accumulated road grime and salt.

  2. Step 2

    Mix up a bucket of cleaning solution. You can use water and mild dish soap, or you can purchase a product such as Simoniz Car Wash Concentrate or Griot's Chrome Wheel Cleaning Kit. Work the cleaning solution of your choice into the rims using a chamois or washcloth. Use small circular motions and gentle pressure.

  3. Step 3

    Rinse with clean water from the hose.

  4. Step 4

    Inspect the rims to see if there is any remaining dirt or debris.

  5. Step 5

    If your rims have developed rust or corrosion, simply pour a can of cola slowly over the rims, and work it in, in gentle circles with a chamois. Make sure to rinse the rims with water and dry thoroughly after applying cola.

  6. Step 6

    Buff the chrome with a clean dry chamois.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always clean chrome when it is cool to the touch to ensure a clean even finish. Always use soft washcloths, sponges or chamois cloths to clean your rims, as something more abrasive can damage the chrome.
