WMV files are Windows Media Video files. They are the equivalent of MPEG-4 video files and are primarily played in Windows Media Player. WMV files work only on Windows-based computers, so you will want to convert those files if you are using a Mac. WMV files can be converted to AVI files, which are video files that can be used on a Mac. The Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate is a popular WMV-to-AVI Mac video converter program available at the CNET Download Center that you can use for this purpose.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the Xilisoft website or the CNET Download Center (see Resources) to download and install the Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate. It is free to download and use for a trial period, but you have to pay to keep it after that. (2009 Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate for Mac price: $59.95.)

  2. Step 2

Click on "Profile" to set your output file type. Select AVI for the output.

  3. Step 3

Click the "Add Files" button, which looks like a filmstrip with a plus sign on it, to add the WMV files. You can select more than one WMV file to be converted at a time.

  4. Step 4

Click on "Browse" by "Destination" to select the location on your computer for the converted AVI files.

  5. Step 5

Click on the button that looks like a filmstrip with a green arrow. This is the "Convert" button that will start the WMV-to-AVI conversion. When a pop-up appears after the conversion is complete, click on "OK" to use the new AVI files.
