Things You'll Need:
- 1-inch thick cedar planks
- Measuring rule
- Pencil
- Handsaw or power saw
- Power drill
- 1 ¼-inch wood screws
- Waterproof wood glue
- Shelf Brackets
-
Step 1
Design your garden boxes to span the length of your window. This is not absolutely necessary but it does make it more appealing to the eye when the plants run across the base of the entire window. You can make your garden window boxes any length, width and height that you desire.
-
Step 2
Measure the length of the window and cut the cedar plank accordingly. You will want 2 boards that run the length of the window (or another desired length), 2 boards for the width of the garden box, and 1 board for the base of the box. Cut these boards to your desired specifications.
-
Step 3
After you cut the cedar planks for your garden window boxes, you will need to drill two holes in each end of the 2 boards that make up the front and back pieces of the boxes. These will be the 2 boards that run the length of the window. For the baseboard of your window box, you also need to drill two holes at each end as well as an additional ½-inch hole to allow the water to drain.
-
Step 4
Use the wood glue to stick the front, back, and side pieces of the garden window boxes together. Drill the wood screws into the pre-drilled holes in the front and back pieces from the previous step.
-
Step 5
Add the base of your garden window boxes using the glue and then drill in the base screws. If you would like to finish your window boxes with a finish of your liking, this is a great time to do so.
-
Step 6
Screw the shelf brackets onto the backside of the window boxes and fasten underneath your window.
-
Step 7
Add soil and plants to your garden window boxes and enjoy!
