Things You'll Need:
- a snowflake eel
- dried krill
- a brave soul
-
Step 1
If you decide to purchase a snowflake eel, get one that is young, and has been raised in captivity. This way, the eel will be accustomed to human contact, and will be accepting of the food you will offer, and open minded to experiencing human contact.
-
Step 2
Don't feed the eel for a few days, so that when it's time to feed the eel, it will be hungry, and receptive. Also, make sure that you don't have any crabs or snails in the tank. Eels love crabs and snails and if they are able to eat them, they won't be hungry for anything that you will offer.
-
Step 3
Using a piece of dried krill, available in most aquarium supply store, start by holding it with a long plastic pincher, and slowly move the krill into the tank, at the level of the eel. The eel will probably smell the food before he sees it, and will move towards the krill. It is not uncommon for the eel to back away and go back into hiding. The eel hopes that you will just release the krill and allow it to dine as it chooses. Don't give up. Remove the food, and try again the following day.
-
Step 4
After doing this a few times, you will see that the eel will take the food from the plastic pincher. Once you are able to entice the eel into accepting the dried krill from the pinchers, you can graduate to hand feeding. You will need to hold the krill firmly between your thumb and forefinger, and hold your hand completely still. When the eel feels ready, it will take the krill from your hand. It takes time to build trust, but once the eel realizes that you will provide him with a tasty snack, he will become your best friend.
