Serving tables is a tough job that isn't for everybody. Even the best of servers get crappy tips here and there, it may not have anything to do with your service, some people are just blind and inconsiderate. These are a few tips and tricks to making good tips, even when you are having a bad day.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience.
  • Extensive knowledge of your place of work's promotions and products.
  • Good attitude.
  • Like what you do.
  1. Step 1

First off, you need to understand the number one key of serving... LEAVE YOUR PROBLEMS AT HOME! Don't bring your life's struggles away from work to work. You aren't going to get a good tip if you're in a bad mood and letting it show, people go out to escape their problems and enjoy a nice meal, have a good time.

  2. Step 2

    Secondly, know your merchandise.

People aren't aware of EVERYTHING on your menu or your current promotions, help them out. They like to be able to ask questions or get good suggestions from somebody who truly knows their stuff.

If they are having trouble deciding on an appetizer, suggest two of your personal favorites and explain them. Let them know the good deals and promotions, without pushing of course, this will help them trust your opinion.

  3. Step 3

Thirdly, work on your check backs.

You don't want to over do it, bugging your customers makes you appear needy and exposes your desire for a tip.

Once you get their drink orders, make them right away and bring them out ASAP. Ask them if their ready, offer an appetizer, if they aren't ready let them have some time. Keep your eyes out, if they look like they aren't focused on your menu, get to their table.

After the food has been delivered to their table, you should check back approximately 2 minutes later and ask "How's your burger?" or whatever it is they may be having, NEVER ask "Are you guys doing alright?" If you specifically ask how their food is, they get the feeling you are sincere.

Your next check back should be 2 bites away from them finishing their food, ask them if they'd like dessert or some to go boxes.

The customer should never have to ask for the check, get your timing down. Bring the check and let them know they are able to take all the time they need and want. When you see that they are ready to pay, tell them thank you for coming and welcome them back.

  4. Step 4

Lastly, definitely not the least, how you engage with your customers.

You should NEVER flirt to get a tip, it kind of makes you seem a little cheap, low and too eager. Just be outgoing, act like their your friends and give them full honesty. Take your time with them as much as possible, they might enjoy a conversation aside from what their about to eat. Be sincere.

  5. Step 5

If you follow these simple steps and tips, then you should most definitely make good tips despite the few customers that are stingy. Enjoy what you are doing, if you don't, serving may not be for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always smile and keep a positive attitude no matter what.
  • Show up well groomed and prepared. Nobody likes a smelly, messy haired, wrinkly shirted server.
