New baby on the way? A foam crib mattress may be ideal for your new bundle of joy. Foam mattresses are preferred for their firm support. Read on to learn how to buy a foam crib mattress.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check the warranty before you purchase a foam crib mattress. Warranties vary from five to fifteen years. Some even have lifetime warranties for defective materials. More importantly, check the limitations of the warranty. A long warranty is of little value if it is extremely limited.

  2. Step 2

Assess the ease of cleaning the foam crib mattress. Some require soap and water to clean and little more. Many now include vinyl, mildew resistant covers which make them easier to clean. Check to see if it is hypoallergenic, if that is a concern for you.

  3. Step 3

Confirm the fire resistance of the foam crib mattress. All mattresses have to meet certain minimum levels of resistance. Read the manufacturers fine print to determine if it is at a level you feel comfortable with.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid using used foam crib mattresses. You do not want to risk using a mattress that has been recalled.
